General Counsel

Duties: Leading the legal efforts involved with serving Aspires students in a K-12 public charter school education setting, with special consideration to the areas of special education and employment law. Coordinate use of outside counsel. Report to the Chief Executive Officer and will also work closely with other leaders in the organization including Chiefs, Superintendents, Principals and Directors to support the organization in legal needs. Provide legal advice and guidance to the network on education law (particularly special education). Stay current on relevant laws and regulations and be seen as the subject matter expert on K-12 education law. Represent the network in front of boards, government agencies, parents, and authorizers on legal issues impacting our scholars. Draft, review and negotiate contracts and other binding agreements as they relate to student issues. Prepare policy reports, memoranda, briefing papers and talking points for internal and external use on education issues. Employment law Provide legal advice and guidance to the network on employment law matters, including providing direct support to our Director of HR and the HR Managers in each of our regions who manage all Employee Relations cases. Supervise responses to requests for information and subpoenas, participate in mediations and other employee related negotiations, and oversee litigation handled by outside counsel. Represent the network in front of boards, government agencies, parents, and authorizers on legal issues impacting our staff. Ensure Aspire’s policies and related documents meet the evolving needs of our schools, scholars, and staff by being involved in the Aspire Employee Handbook and Family Handbook annual review process if needed. Board Governance Draft internal and external policies and procedures Prepare and deliver trainings on Brown Act, Form 700, compensation reviews and guide the Board to ensure compliance with those regulations Attend all Board meetings to serve as legal resource for Board and CEO Risk Management & Compliance Coordinate, oversee and analyze compliance reporting requirements Review and negotiate contracts Partner with CFO to oversee insurance Provide guidance on the charter law and compliance including language in charters and the legality of district requests. Coordination of outside legal counsel Direct staff on finding outside legal counsel on matters beyond education law and employment law matters. Communicate independently with outside counsel and representatives of outside agencies. Develop relationships with other lawyers at CMOs and bring best practices to the organization. Support the mission, vision, and core values of Aspire Public Schools. Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
