Job Overview:

The Tax Controversy Counsel will be responsible for providing legal representation and counsel to clients involved in tax disputes. They will handle various aspects of tax litigation, with a focus on civil and criminal tax controversy matters. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in tax law and litigation, along with strong analytical skills and a commitment to delivering high-quality legal services.

Duties:

• Represent clients in tax litigation proceedings before various courts, including tax court.
• Provide legal advice and guidance on tax controversy matters, including civil and criminal issues.
• Conduct legal research and analysis to support clients' cases and develop effective strategies.
• Prepare and file legal documents, pleadings, and motions related to tax disputes.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external experts to build strong cases and achieve favorable outcomes for clients.
• Negotiate settlements and agreements with tax authorities on behalf of clients.
• Stay updated on changes in tax laws, regulations, and court rulings relevant to tax controversy practice.
• Provide guidance and mentorship to junior attorneys and staff members.

Requirements:

• Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school.
• LLM in Taxation is required.
• 8-10 years of experience in tax litigation, with a focus on tax controversy matters.
• Demonstrated experience in tax court proceedings.
• Strong understanding of civil and criminal tax laws and regulations.
• Familiarity with whistleblower claims and voluntary offshore disclosures is preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple cases and prioritize workload effectively.
• Licensed to practice law in South Carolina.
