invites applications for a temporary, full-time

Visiting Assistant Professor

to begin fall 2022. We seek a colleague that compliments current expertise in the Department with teaching expertise in quantitative Earth sciences in one or more of the following fields: critical zone science, computational Earth science, remote sensing, geospatial analysis, hydrology, or natural disasters. The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to teach additional courses during summer session on a separate contract.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be a dynamic teacher with a strong commitment to education and learning. The candidate is expected to teach across the undergraduate spectrum in physical critical-zone science. Courses could include introductory environmental science, oceanography, hydrology, hydrogeology, computational methods in environmental sciences and critical zone science. The successful candidate with be responsible for curriculum development of classroom, laboratory and field-based learning activities. There may also be opportunities for teaching other graduate level courses in the successful candidate’s area of expertise, team teaching with Department faculty, online teaching, and/or advising and supervision of undergraduate student research.

Qualifications:

Required Experience and skills

A PhD in Earth sciences, Geosciences or closely related field

Preferred Experience and skills

Demonstrated commitment or experience in curriculum development including laboratory, classroom, and field-based activities

Demonstrated commitment to research and teaching in critical zone science.

Demonstrated commitment or experience in mentoring undergraduate research

Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students and colleagues in an active, inclusive and culturally relevant learning environment

Prior non-academic work experience in geoscience and/or environmental sciences

Position Details

Full-time, 1.0 FTE, academic year (10 month), non-tenurable position, includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.

Opportunity to teach future summer session courses on a separate contract.

Salary for this position $55,000 – $60,000 per year commensurate with experience.

The Department of Geosciences is a small department with about 40 undergraduate majors, and about 25 graduate students. The department’s mission is to develop new knowledge regarding Earth's history, its environment and resources, engage our students in the process, and share that knowledge broadly. We analyze how earth materials such as water, minerals, sediments and rocks, and energy move and change. Department faculty have specific expertise in sedimentology, petrology, geophysics, geomorphology, glaciology, and hydrology.
