Job Overview

A law firm seeks a skilled Patent Agent specializing in biomedical devices to join their Intellectual Property team in San Francisco, CA. The ideal candidate will have over three years of experience in patent prosecution and a strong background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related medical device technology.

Duties

  • Prepare draft patent applications, incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices.
  • Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions.
  • Investigate general and specific technologies as needed.
  • Discuss scientific aspects of inventions with clients and inventors.
  • Identify and analyze complex patent issues and implement solutions.
  • Communicate with inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office regarding patent applications.
  • Interact professionally with clients, lawyers, and staff at all levels.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks efficiently under time constraints.
  • Stay updated on technology trends and patent prosecution issues.
  • Enter, maintain, and analyze data for reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related field preferred; Master's or PhD in a related field is advantageous.
  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Strong investigative and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of patent documentation drafting principles.
  • Familiarity with current and emerging developments in the field.
  • Proficient in research principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Familiarity with prosecution docketing systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours as needed.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field preferred; advanced degrees are a plus.

Certifications

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Skills

  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret research findings.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in time management software.
