A law firm in Ann Arbor, MI, is seeking a Tax Litigation Attorney who possesses a wealth of experience in tax court litigation, including substantial expertise in civil tax controversy matters and prior public sector trial lawyering in both federal and state courts. The ideal candidate should excel in refund litigation matters and, ideally, have familiarity with the IRS Chief of Counsel, the US Attorney's Office, and/or the DOJ Tax Division. The role also requires demonstrated skills in business development, file management, client supervision, case leadership, and exceptional customer/client service.

Duties:

  • Represent clients in tax court litigation, with a primary focus on civil tax controversy cases.
  • Advocate for clients in both federal and state courts, leveraging prior experience as a trial lawyer in the public sector.
  • Concentrate on refund litigation matters to secure favorable outcomes for clients.
  • Develop and maintain a portable book of business with growth potential.
  • Efficiently manage legal files, ensuring the timely and accurate handling of documentation.
  • Provide supervision and guidance in client interactions, ensuring their needs are met.
  • Lead legal cases from initiation to resolution, ensuring client satisfaction throughout the process.
  • Deliver exceptional customer/client service to establish and strengthen client relationships.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in tax court litigation.
  • Extensive experience in civil tax controversy matters.
  • Prior experience as a trial lawyer in both federal and state courts is essential.
  • Familiarity with the IRS Chief of Counsel, the US Attorney's Office, and/or the DOJ Tax Division is preferred.
  • Admission to the Michigan Bar is a mandatory requirement.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • A strong academic record and relevant coursework in tax law are advantageous.

Certifications:

  • Must be a licensed attorney with admission to the Michigan Bar.
