A respected intellectual property law firm is seeking an Associate Attorney with 3–7 years of experience in patent prosecution to join its Chemical Patent Prosecution Practice Group. This hybrid role is based out of the firm's Alexandria, Virginia office and is ideal for candidates with a strong technical background in chemistry or chemical engineering. The position involves strategic IP counseling, patent application drafting, and prosecution for cutting-edge technologies in the chemical space.

Prepare and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications in the chemical arts
Analyze office actions and draft responses for domestic and foreign patent offices
Conduct invention disclosure meetings and communicate directly with clients
Advise clients on patentability, freedom-to-operate, and IP portfolio strategies
Draft agreements and provide counsel on related intellectual property transactions
Support appeals and post-grant proceedings
Assist in mentoring and reviewing work of junior patent practitioners
3–7 years of patent prosecution experience in a law firm setting
Demonstrated experience in chemical patent preparation and prosecution
Industrial or technical experience in the field is a plus
Former USPTO examiners and Administrative Patent Judges (APJs) encouraged to apply
Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school
Bachelor’s degree in inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, or chemical engineering required
Master’s or Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field strongly preferred
Admitted to practice in at least one U.S. state bar
Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
Deep technical knowledge in chemistry-related fields
Strong legal research, drafting, and analytical skills
Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
Proven ability to manage client relationships and multiple concurrent matters
Detail-oriented with strong time management and organizational skills
