A prominent law firm is seeking a mid-level Associate Attorney with 3–5 years of experience to join its Maritime Practice Group in New York City. This position involves representing clients in domestic and international maritime litigation and arbitration, with a focus on charterparty, cargo, and maritime casualty disputes. The ideal candidate will also have experience in regulatory matters or vessel transactions, and prior shipboard or military maritime service is a plus. Duties

  • Handle litigation and arbitration involving:

    • Charterparty disputes

    • Cargo claims

    • Maritime casualties

  • Provide legal counsel on U.S. Coast Guard and Customs compliance matters

  • Assist with vessel-related transactions including:

    • Purchase and sale agreements

    • Vessel financing and registration (U.S. and foreign)

    • Chartering arrangements

  • Conduct legal research, draft motions, and represent clients in arbitration or court proceedings

  • Collaborate with senior attorneys on case strategy and trial preparation

  • Maintain communication with clients and opposing counsel on case status and legal processes

Requirements

  • 3–5 years of experience in maritime litigation and arbitration

  • Familiarity with regulatory and transactional maritime legal issues

  • Ability to manage complex caseloads in a fast-paced practice

  • Excellent legal research and drafting abilities

  • Admission to the New York State Bar (required)

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school

Certifications

  • Active license to practice law in New York (mandatory)

Skills

  • Deep understanding of maritime law and related dispute resolution forums

  • Strong analytical, litigation, and negotiation skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Prior experience with Coast Guard or Customs matters preferred

  • Background in the Navy, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, or shipboard operations is a plus
