Director, Employee Relations
Duties: Responsible for leading a centralized department that provides employee relations services for the system. Leads efforts to enhance employee relations through the adoption of “best practices” employee relations policies, programs, and processes in a variety of areas including performance management, investigations, risk mitigation, and leave management. Works regularly with senior staff to develop a culture of continuous improvement, employee engagement, and fairness; collaborates with other members of the Human Resource leadership team across functional areas to bring programs of value to the organization; and manages a professional staff responsible for employee relations activities.
Supervises and provides direction to assigned staff on employee relations investigations, escalated issues, problems, disciplinary actions, etc. Oversees daily activities of the Employee Relations department; develops and implements short and long-term plans designed to achieve department objectives; researches best practices and designs and implements employee relations programs and policies; maintains an accurate, organized and confidential case management system; develops and maintains accurate reporting for various internal clients, including HR peers and operational leaders. Proactively monitors trends regarding employee relations cases (i.e. complaints, claims, lawsuits, unemployment compensation data) and develops, in consultation with Legal Counsel, comprehensive plans to address areas of concern through performance management, leadership development, and education/training. Conducts confidential and sensitive investigations regarding workplace concerns independently or in partnership with Security, Privacy, and Risk Management. Collaborates with HR Business Partners to analyze employee data (e.g. engagement survey data, exit interview data) and develops strategies for driving increased engagement and retention. Partners with fellow HR Centers of Expertise (e.g. HR Shared Services, Talent Acquisition, Compensation) on various initiatives. Serves as subject matter expert on employee relations implications of proposed business restructuring or transactions. Under the direction of Legal Counsel, responds to governmental claims (e.g. EEOC, DOL). Works with HR Business Partners and Legal Counsel to develop guidelines around obtaining the proper work permits and visas for current and prospective employees. Partners with Legal Counsel on communicating and coaching around maintaining union free status including utilizing union vulnerability measurement tools. Works closely with Legal Counsel to ensure employee relations processes/policies are fair and consistent with Memorial Hermann policy and legal regulations. Ensures employee questions, concerns and complaints are openly welcomed, considered, and appropriately responded to in the Human Resources Department. Reviews monthly financial statements and accompanying documents; ensures expenses, contribution margin and FTE’s meet or exceed budget; prepares and submits budget and related reports; forecasts and accurately projects expenses; takes corrective action to address negative variances; and identifies and proposes capital budget items appropriately. Adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service. Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
