Spring Legal Internship
The candidate will work closely with the Civil Rights and Immigration Attorney on resolving cases of discrimination reported to CAIR-WA, as well as visa application cases. Assist in documenting incidents of religious discrimination by counseling and interviewing complainants regarding their incidents. Research laws and policies on employment, student conduct, and immigration procedures, as well as criminal offenses and other areas as seen fit. Assist in maintaining the civil rights case management system. Update databases containing information about abuses reported to CAIR-WA. For those proficient in foreign languages primarily spoken by Muslim individuals (Arabic, Urdu, Farsi, Spanish), participate in translating for complainants in communications with the legal department or during legal proceedings, and translating documents for clients. Internships are open to undergraduate students or graduate students not enrolled in a J.D./L.L.M. program. A minimum commitment of 16 hours per week for 10 weeks is required during the school year. In order to ensure that each intern’s experience is maximized, each intern will be required to develop and train in the following core specialties: Intake Processing; Legal & Policy Research; and Administrative Assistance. Will be organized and demonstrate the ability to follow through on various on-going and newly assigned tasks. Must have academic standing in an undergraduate or graduate program during the time period of the internship. Should have an interest in civil liberties and civil rights. Must have proven commitment to serving the community.
