The candidate provides programmatic legal advice and support to the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA) in support of the Department’s work in opening foreign markets, fostering the free flow of data across borders, ensuring compliance with international trade agreements, promoting investment in the United States, supporting U.S. exports, and protecting U.S. commercial interests abroad. Work on diverse legal issues including international trade, investment, competition, anticorruption and transparency, and export promotion. Attorneys in the office support the negotiation and implementation of international trade and investment agreements, work on ensuring that foreign countries are complying with these agreements, and provide legal support to a wide variety of ITA trade and investment programs. Serving in this position will provide legal advice and support to ITA on laws, regulations, international agreements, and commercial practices in the United States and foreign countries affecting trade and investment. Must be able to handle a variety of assignments with short, time-critical deadlines. Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills suitable for successfully working on a team with ITA and other attorneys in the Office of the General Counsel. The attorney will work closely with staff on projects that require legal analysis and in developing and implementing programs to ensure their consistency with legal requirements. Work will involve legal review of ITA’s programs, agreements, briefing materials, and correspondence for legal accuracy. The attorney will also be expected to analyze legal risks and develop recommendations that minimize these risks. Must provide proof of an active bar membership in good standing of the bar of a state, territory of the United States, the District of Columbia or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Must possess 1 year of professional legal experience following law school. The ideal candidate will have experience in the practice of international trade and/or investment law, specifically involving multilateral or bilateral trade-related agreements or arrangements. Must have graduated from an ABA-accredited law school. Applicant must provide a law school transcript reflecting a conferred J.D.
