The Washington State Legislature is a bicameral body comprised of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Legislature meets annually on the second Monday in January in the Capitol Building in Olympia. Regular legislative sessions take place January through March in even-numbered years and January through April in odd-numbered years. Special legislative sessions occur as needed.

General Description
REPORTS TO: Co-reporting to Senate Civic Education Director & House of Representatives Civic Education Director
CLOSES: October 31, 2022 at 5:00 PM.
Our ideal candidate has a driving passion for the work, brings humility to their job and interactions, and understands how their actions affect others. They see the needs and objectives of students and take them into account while achieving their objectives, and they adapt their approach and expectations accordingly. They are nimble and adaptive and can have courageous conversations when needed. They understand the House of Representatives and Senate Page Programs are often the first exposure to state government for students and this experience positively impacts their relationship with civic engagement into adulthood.
Position Profile
During each week of the legislative session approximately 30 students, ages 14 to 16, from across Washington to serve as House and Senate Pages and participate in state government. Students submit applications and are selected by the Senator or Representative from their legislative district. The typical day of a page is divided between work on the House and Senate floor, distributing materials throughout the Capitol Campus, supporting member offices, and presenting the colors at the opening of the day’s session.
Pages spend time each day attending Page School, which supplements the hands-on learning experience with a classroom component geared toward understanding the legislative process. To provide the best experience possible to all learners, the Page School employs two certificated teachers and maintains class sizes below fifteen. Pages attend the school for two hours each day in a mixed class setting with House and Senate Pages. Using activities, technology, and guest speakers, the group endeavors down a path of learning focused on the three branches of government, the lawmaking process, and the importance of civil discourse. The capstone project is a mock committee hearing that takes place in the actual hearing rooms and is streamed on TVW.org for families, friends, and educators to observe.
Pages receive a stipend of $35 per day and may apply for the Gina Grant Bull Memorial Legislative Page Scholarship to help offset costs of paging.
The Assistant Page School Teacher alternates with the Page School Teacher in delivering classroom instruction during school sessions each day. During the time when they are not actively involved in the classroom, the assistant teacher works in the office on routine weekly projects such as preparing schedules for mock committee hearings, editing photos for the weekly newsletter, preparing teaching documents or confirming guest speakers for the following week.
