Job Overview:
A nationally recognized law firm is seeking a mid- to senior-level Tax Associate to join its transactional tax team within the Tax & Benefits practice. This position focuses on complex energy sector transactions, with an emphasis on renewable energy tax credit financings and M&A. The role involves advising a variety of energy industry stakeholders including tax equity investors, lenders, utilities, and project developers. Ideal candidates will have a background in transactional tax law, partnership taxation, and energy project financing. The position offers firm-wide collaboration and direct client engagement, and is open across multiple major U.S. office locations.

Location:

  • Washington, D.C.

Duties:

  • Advise on federal income tax issues related to renewable energy transactions, including tax equity financing, M&A, and structuring

  • Represent clients involved in solar, wind, carbon capture, and energy storage projects

  • Draft and review partnership agreements, tax opinions, and transaction documents

  • Provide guidance to utilities and unregulated affiliates on tax planning and compliance

  • Collaborate with cross-practice teams on transactional matters

  • Conduct tax research and analysis and present findings to clients and internal teams

  • Participate in business development, thought leadership, and industry conferences

Requirements:

  • 5 to 8 years of experience in transactional tax law

  • Direct experience in the energy industry, including renewable energy tax credits and project finance

  • Familiarity with tax equity structuring and partnership taxation

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex, deadline-driven projects with multiple stakeholders

  • Strong client service and interpersonal skills

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school

Certifications:

  • Active license in good standing in the state of practice

Skills:

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills

  • Strong academic credentials

  • Proficiency in analyzing federal income tax issues related to partnerships and corporate structures

  • Experience working with or advising utilities and energy developers

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment

  • Experience from a law firm preferred; experience at a large accounting firm may also be considered
