Job Overview:
A law firm is hiring a Life Sciences Patent Agent with over 2 years of experience to join their distinguished Intellectual Property team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biomedical engineering, molecular biology, biochemistry, DNA sequencing, immunology, physics, or material science, as well as relevant medical device or life sciences technology experience. Advanced degrees are preferred. The position requires expertise in patent prosecution, with some experience in patent portfolio analysis, due diligence, and IP transactional matters. Knowledge of PTAB proceedings is a plus but not required. Registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is mandatory. This position is available in multiple office locations, with hybrid work options available.

Location:

Duties:

  • Draft patent applications incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Prepare responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices regarding scientific matters.
  • Discuss scientific details of inventions with clients and inventors, providing attorneys with detailed reports.
  • Act as a liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office (PTO) throughout the patent application process.
  • Analyze and report on technological aspects of inventions, advising attorneys on specific technologies.
  • Organize, analyze, review, and summarize patent-related documents.
  • Conduct regulatory and factual research to support patent applications.
  • Communicate with clients, staff, vendors, and PTO personnel via email, phone, and in-person.
  • Coordinate workflow with external service providers.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively, meeting deadlines under time constraints.
  • Identify and resolve complex patent issues.
  • Maintain confidentiality while interacting professionally with clients, attorneys, and team members.
  • Provide direction to legal support staff on patent-specific matters.
  • Stay updated on technological advancements and trends in the life sciences field.
  • Participate in ongoing education to maintain accreditation and stay informed on patent prosecution issues.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of experience in patent prosecution, particularly in life sciences or related fields.
  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences (advanced degrees preferred).
  • Licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is preferred.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret research findings and draft comprehensive reports.
  • Strong investigative and problem-solving abilities.
  • Expertise in patent documentation drafting and patent law principles.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical and factual information effectively.
  • Proficient in recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with diverse individuals.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with discretion.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Familiarity with patent portfolio management and due diligence processes.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to travel locally and out of town when required.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, biomedical engineering, or related field.
  • Advanced degrees (Master’s or Ph.D.) preferred.

Certifications:

  • Registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is preferred.
  • Continuing education in patent prosecution and related fields is required to maintain professional accreditation.
