Duties
Manage a varied defense caseload, handling matters from initial intake through trial under partner supervision
Draft and file pleadings, motions, orders, and legal memoranda tailored to each case’s facts and procedural posture
Prepare and respond to written discovery requests, including interrogatories, requests for production, and dispositive motions
Conduct legal research on state and federal court rules, relevant statutes, and case law to support motion practice and case strategy
Prepare for and take depositions of parties, experts, and fact witnesses, developing thorough outlines and exhibit lists
Review client documents, draft case evaluations, and maintain clear status updates and correspondence with stakeholders
Participate in mediations, court conferences, and oral arguments, advocating effectively on behalf of clients
Collaborate with partners, paralegals, and support staff to ensure efficient case progress and consistent client communication
Interface directly with clients, insurance carriers, opposing counsel, and in-house claim professionals to address emerging issues and adjust strategy as needed
Requirements
Licensed to practice law in New York and be in good standing; additional admission to New Jersey or other jurisdictions preferred
Minimum of five years of defense litigation experience, with a focus on toxic tort or similar civil-defense matters
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced practice environment
Strong attention to detail, with the capacity to juggle multiple case files and prioritize tasks effectively
Solid understanding of state and federal court procedures, rules of evidence, and civil procedure timelines
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and comfort navigating internet-based legal research tools
Ability to transition smoothly between different matters, adapting legal strategy to diverse fact patterns
Education
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school
Certifications
Active membership in the New York State Bar (required)
Membership in additional state bars (e.g., New Jersey) or relevant professional defense associations is a plus
