Litigation Paralegal
Duties: Emphasis in civil litigation and administrative proceedings relative to a public agency and specific to higher education. Supporting attorney(s) in all facets of litigation before federal and state courts and administrative agencies, including claims analysis, factual research, application of federal, state, and local court rules and other agency requirements, track filing deadlines, proof and finalize briefs and assemble exhibits, submit electronic court filings, interact with opposing counsel and co-counsel, clients, and other interested parties. Duties also include organization of electronic and paper case files, handling and tracking of subpoenas and subpoena responses and other records requests, compiling documents for production, assisting with discovery requests and responses, and preparing basic legal pleadings. May also work with others in the office, as needed, to provide general support to the Office of the General Counsel. Under the supervision of attorney, assist attorneys in all stages of the litigation process, including: Assist with tracking and meeting filing deadlines. Draft standard pleadings, notices and correspondence. Review and proof substantive legal briefs. Draft interrogatories, requests for production, and requests for admission. Meet with clients and collect, organize, and review client files. Prepare chronologies and timelines of events. Review, redact, and bates number documents and records to be produced. Conduct factual investigation and witness interviews. Coordinate and schedule depositions, draft deposition outlines, and select potential exhibits for attorney review. Prepare trial exhibits and coordinate witnesses for trial and/or mediation. Assist with preparing pretrial and trial pleadings. Organize, mark and index trial exhibits. Coordinate and prepare graphic trial exhibits. Track and manage deposition transcripts. Assist attorneys in responding to agency charges of discrimination and complaints, including charges and complaints received from the Kansas Human Rights Commission, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Office for Civil Rights. Review and analyze agency charges and complaints, identify critical legal and statutory issues of the dispute. Collect, organize, and analyze relevant documentation and information. Coordinate witness interviews. Prepare records for submission to agencies. Assist attorneys in labor grievance matters. Assist attorneys in internal proceedings. Assist attorneys in investigating and evaluating claims and potential claims against the university. Handle client inquiries, organize and maintain paper and electronic files. Perform occasional research via internet, westlaw, and pacer; gather and organize documents from departments throughout the university. Respond to both subpoena and non-subpoena records requests.
