Job Overview:
A prominent law firm located in Minneapolis, MN, is seeking a motivated and technically skilled Patent Associate to join its intellectual property group. The role will concentrate on patent drafting and prosecution with a focus on innovations related to chemical engineering and materials science. This is an excellent opportunity for a junior attorney to grow within a collaborative team handling a range of patent-related matters involving complex technologies.

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute domestic and international patent applications in the fields of chemical and materials engineering

  • Analyze invention disclosures and provide patentability assessments

  • Collaborate with inventors, scientists, and business stakeholders to align IP strategy with business goals

  • Conduct technical and legal research to support patent portfolio development and management

  • Assist in preparing opinions related to freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and infringement

  • Support client counseling on IP strategy and related legal matters

  • Maintain proficiency with USPTO procedures and global patent laws

Requirements:

  • 1-3 years of experience in patent prosecution, preferably with exposure to both chemical and mechanical technologies

  • Demonstrated knowledge of filtration systems, polymers, materials science, or medical devices

  • Ability to handle complex matters with a high degree of autonomy under partner supervision

  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Education:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Member in good standing of at least one U.S. State Bar

  • USPTO registration number required

Skills:

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail

  • Excellent legal writing and verbal communication abilities

  • Team-oriented mindset with strong client service orientation

  • Capable of handling multiple projects in a deadline-driven environment

Job Location:

  • Minneapolis, MN (hybrid schedule, typically two to three days in-office per week)
