Duties
Handle summary eviction proceedings and initiate or defend Supreme Court actions related to commercial leases
Conduct factual and legal research to support pleadings, motions, and affidavits
Draft and file court submissions, including complaints, motions to dismiss or compel, and responses to discovery
Advocate for clients at hearings, calendar calls, and status conferences
Collaborate with support staff to manage case files, track deadlines, and prepare trial exhibits
Negotiate resolutions with opposing counsel, landlords, tenants, and collection agencies
Review and analyze lease agreements, amendments, and related transactional documents
Counsel clients on risk mitigation strategies, lease compliance, and best practices for dispute avoidance
Maintain effective communication with clients regarding case progress, strategy, and outcomes
Requirements
2–5 years of hands-on experience in commercial litigation, with emphasis on landlord/tenant matters and collections
Proven track record managing summary proceedings (holdover and nonpayment cases) and articulating strategies in Supreme Court actions
Exceptional legal research and writing abilities; familiarity with electronic research platforms
Strong oral advocacy skills, including motion arguments and settlement negotiations
Ability to juggle a busy caseload, prioritize tasks, and meet court-imposed deadlines
Solid judgment, attention to detail, and capacity to work independently as well as within a team environment
Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, and high ethical standards
Education
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
Certifications
Admission to the New York State Bar (required)
Skills
Advanced legal research proficiency (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis)
Superior written communication, including drafting complex pleadings and correspondence
Effective oral communication and courtroom presentation skills
Strong negotiation tactics for settlement discussions
Proficiency with standard office software (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel)
Ability to mentor junior staff or paralegals when needed
