A respected law firm is currently seeking a Patent Agent with an advanced degree in Chemistry or a closely related discipline to join its Intellectual Property practice group. The role is suited for candidates with 1–4 years of experience in patent prosecution, particularly those with exposure to patent portfolio management, due diligence, and IP transactions. This position offers a hybrid work arrangement and the opportunity to work alongside attorneys and clients on sophisticated chemical and pharmaceutical technologies.
Draft patent applications, integrating scientific and technical details of inventions
Prepare responses to U.S. and international patent office communications
Evaluate and report on the scientific and technological aspects of inventions
Conduct prior art searches and technology research in connection with patent filings
Advise clients and inventors on scientific aspects of patent applications
Support patent portfolio strategy and IP due diligence for transactions
Liaise with the USPTO throughout the patent application process
Interact professionally with clients, attorneys, and internal team members
Manage multiple assignments and deadlines in a cost-effective, efficient manner
Stay current on patent law developments, scientific trends, and procedural updates
Maintain internal systems and generate reports related to patent prosecution activity
1–4 years of experience in patent prosecution
Exposure to patent portfolio analysis or IP transactional matters preferred
Familiarity with USPTO rules and procedures
Ability to manage deadlines, multitask, and handle workload fluctuations
Availability to work occasional overtime, including evenings and weekends when required
M.S. or Ph.D. in one of the following fields:
Chemistry
Organic Chemistry
Medicinal Chemistry
Biochemistry
Chemical Engineering
Qualified to sit for the U.S. Patent Bar
Preferred: Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
Strong technical and legal writing skills
Ability to analyze and interpret complex research findings
Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and time management software
Familiarity with prosecution docketing systems
Excellent verbal and written communication skills for technical audiences
Knowledge of ethical responsibilities and the ability to maintain confidentiality
Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with clients, inventors, and internal teams
Ability to stay current with developments in both science and patent law
