Job Title: Patent Agent (Biomedical Device)
Job Overview:
A New York City-based law firm is actively seeking a qualified Patent Agent with substantial experience in patent prosecution and technical expertise in biomedical engineering, mechanical systems, materials science, or closely aligned fields. The position involves working on intellectual property matters related to cutting-edge medical technologies and devices. The ideal candidate will contribute to a range of IP-related functions, including patent drafting, prosecution, due diligence analysis, and potentially post-grant proceedings.
Duties:
Draft and revise patent applications, integrating complex scientific and engineering concepts
Respond to communications from U.S. and international patent authorities regarding technical and legal matters
Conduct technological evaluations of inventions and related subject matter
Communicate with inventors to clarify scientific elements and advance patent strategy
Identify and solve intricate IP issues using sound technical judgment
Serve as liaison between inventors and patent offices throughout the application lifecycle
Maintain professional correspondence with clients, internal legal teams, and external patent office staff
Manage multiple tasks efficiently within deadlines and budget constraints
Keep informed of technological advances relevant to client innovations and industry developments
Maintain compliance with all legal and ethical standards related to confidentiality and IP protection
Support the preparation and maintenance of firmwide reporting data relevant to IP filings
Requirements:
Minimum of 3 years' experience in patent prosecution
Background in medical device-related fields such as biomedical or mechanical engineering, physics, or materials science
Familiarity with due diligence, portfolio management, and transactional IP matters
Experience with PTAB proceedings is considered beneficial
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and research abilities
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly in technical writing
Ability to adapt quickly to changing project demands and multitask efficiently
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or a related discipline
An advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a relevant technical field is advantageous
Certifications:
Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is required
Patent Bar eligibility is required if not already licensed
Skills:
Advanced technical comprehension in medical device technologies
Proficiency in drafting complex patent documentation
In-depth knowledge of patent laws and USPTO procedures
Skilled in using research databases, legal tech tools, and docketing software
Comfortable operating within a hybrid work environment and meeting firm-set office attendance expectations
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interface with individuals across various roles and levels
