Associate General Counsel – Intellectual Property

The Office of General Counsel at the University of Cincinnati is seeking an Associate General Counsel to support the University’s intellectual property strategy, with a focus on chemical arts and life sciences patents. This position will report to the Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel or their designee, and will primarily support the University of Cincinnati’s Office of Innovation (OoI). The Office of Innovation’s OoI’s mission is to ignite a thriving uptown innovation corridor, populated with large corporate partners, fast-moving startups, and curated access to student and faculty talent. In leading that charge, the Office recently moved into the University’s new 133,000 square foot 1819 Innovation Hub.

The Office of General Counsel (OGC) is a fast-paced, high-volume environment that provides a high level of legal services to the University. In addition to patent expertise, the successful candidate will also have the ability to exercise sound independent judgment and will work collaboratively and cooperatively with other members of the OGC team, OoI and UC’s inventors. Essential Function

Reporting to the VP Legal Affairs and General Counsel, this position primarily supports the University of Cincinnati’s Office of Innovation, collaborating with the Office of Innovation’s leadership to develop and implement patent strategy as well as protect and commercialize innovations.

Characteristic Duties

Work closely with Office of Innovation leadership to develop and implement patent strategy & protect and commercialize innovations.

Effectively communicate proposed patent strategy and patent law to the UC community.

Conduct patent landscape analyses to identify new opportunities.

Search and assess prior art.

Analyze patent prosecution materials.

Prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications.

Support licensing and technology transfer.

Manage patent portfolio.

Other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Juris Doctorate (JD) from an ABA accredited law school. Licensed and in good standing with the Ohio bar.

Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Minimum of eight (8) years of experience practicing law with a law firm, corporation or university, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications, drafting patent opinions, and managing patent portfolios.

Exceptional legal research and analytic decision-making skills; proficient oral and written communications and strong advocacy skills.

Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to prioritize and multi-task, and to collaborate with diverse stakeholders in a high-volume, but good-humored environment

Must qualify for appointment as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Ohio

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or chemical engineering preferred, although candidates with expertise in other scientific fields are encouraged to apply
