Job Overview
A globally recognized law firm is seeking a highly experienced Senior Environmental Attorney to join its Environmental and Mass Tort team. This position is ideal for a legal professional with extensive experience in environmental, energy, and natural resources law, particularly those who have worked on high-profile infrastructure, renewable energy, and project finance matters. The role offers the opportunity to engage in significant legal work involving permitting, environmental due diligence, and compliance advisory across large-scale projects, including those involving energy transition and carbon markets.
Location
Duties
Provide legal counsel on federal and state environmental regulations.
Manage permitting for air, water, wetlands, underground injection control (UIC), and offshore facilities.
Oversee environmental review processes under NEPA, CEQA, and similar frameworks.
Advise on site remediation and assessment under CERCLA, RCRA, and state programs.
Conduct due diligence and draft environmental provisions for M&A and project finance deals.
Collaborate with lenders, developers, and finance attorneys to address environmental risk and compliance.
Review and analyze third-party environmental reports (e.g., Phase I/II ESAs, ecological studies, wetlands delineations).
Evaluate title and survey documents for environmental restrictions and lender requirements.
Advise on ESA compliance, land use law, conservation planning, and utility commission proceedings.
Support projects in the carbon markets, CCS, and international regulatory environments.
Requirements
Minimum 8 years of legal experience in environmental law.
Extensive knowledge of U.S. environmental regulatory programs.
Proven experience advising on project development, permitting, and environmental risk in transactional contexts.
Strong familiarity with utility-scale renewable energy, infrastructure, and natural resource projects.
Ability to interface with multiple stakeholders, including government agencies and project financiers.
Education
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
Certifications
Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
Skills
Advanced knowledge of NEPA, CEQA, CERCLA, RCRA, UIC, and ESA.
Ability to draft and negotiate complex environmental provisions and compliance agreements.
Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills.
Proficient in evaluating technical environmental documentation.
Knowledge of energy transition technologies, carbon policy, and cross-border project issues.
Capable of managing fast-paced, multidisciplinary legal matters with precision.
