Description
Under the direction and supervision of the RN, the Secretary/ Patient Care Technician is responsible for the organization and daily operational support of the patient care unit and for performing clerical and receptionist duties, including requisitioning supplies, equipment and service from other departments. The Secretary/Patient Care Technician will be responsible for adhering to Hospital Policies and Nursing Standards. This position is a non-licensed/certified staff member authorized to transport and/or stock medications to meet specified essential job duties.  This includes staff who do not have the authority to prescribe, dispense and/or administer medications.  The Secretary/Patient Care Technician performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.
 
Principle Accountabilities:
 
Performs clerical / secretarial duties to include but not limited to:

Assemble medical record.
Accurately completes admission paperwork, obtains ID bands as needed.
Accepts patient reservation for inpatient.
Reviews face sheet information with patients, verifying name, address, phone number, date of birth and e-mail address and corrects as necessary.
Checks/completes all consult orders.
Completes discharge process in Cerner and breakdown chart.
Transfers patients location and status in Cerner.
Copy/request printing of chart for transfer.
Performs computer entry as needed.
Faxes reports.
Stocks supplies for printer and copier.
Enters charges/credits, updates status and location.
Collate reports from printer and provide to charge nurse.
Prints emergency preparedness list, medication sheets, etc. as directed.
Prints the preferred pharmacy report and completes daily.
Ensures completion of \Release of Information form\ and places in the chart.
Scan information as needed.
Print reservation/OR/cath lab list.

Performs receptionist duties to include but not limited to:

Acknowledges and greets guests/visitors to the division.
Escorts new patients to their room.
Answers telephone using telephone etiquette; takes and relays messages to appropriate personnel.
Facilitate calls to physicians, other departments, transportation, etc.
Update whiteboard as directed.
Answers call light and relays messages.
Programs Nurse/PCT/secretary into call light system at beginning of shift and/or with change.
Programs empty rooms into PCT assignment.
Maintains positive communications with patients, coworkers, and staff.

Performs division duties to include, but not limited to:

During Code Blue, calls doctors, clergy, SPD supplies, lab, etc.
Calls and reports repairs or needs to maintenance.
Inventory/order and stock paper and isolation supplies.
Handles \u201clost and found\u201d items.
Pass Water.
Record refrigerator temperature.
Cleans equipment.
Assist with cleanliness and organization of the nurses station and patient rooms.
Transports patients as appropriate.
Prepare rooms for admissions.
Transport and/or stock medications.
Pass/return trays to carts.
Assist with the recording or collection of QI data.

Performs other work duties as assigned (i.e. cross-train as registrar).

Send messages to Ascom phones
Checks blood tubes for expiration dates monthly.

Secretaries in the registrar role will coordinate patient flow through the registration process. Accurately pre-registers and registers patients.

Accurately completes admission paperwork; obtains patient signatures; places name band on patient.
Accepts patient reservation for inpatient.
Obtains face sheets as requested.
Gives each patient admission packet and review contents i.e. patient rights, patient menu explaining how/when to order.
Sets up welcome video as appropriate.
Collects co-pays and deposits as directed
Initiates documentation on Advance Directive, obtaining copy from HIS as necessary.

Other work duties as assigned Performs general, non-licensed respiratory procedures:oximetry spot checksoxygen set-ups, tank exchange
Assist patients with mobility needs:transfersturning and repositioning in bedmaintaining a clean and safe room environmentassisting patient to bathroomtransporting to tests or other hospital locationsutilizes lift equipment as needed.
Performs other patient care activities to include, but not limited to:

simple skin care
oral hygiene
partial and complete bath
shaving
bed making (unoccupied and occupied)
foley care and emptying and recording output from foley catheters
providing bedpan or urinal as needed
weigh patients
application and reapplication of SCD\u2019s, TED hose, Aqua K pads, cold packs
passing and collecting meal trays, passes water, juice and snacks
administering ice chips*
feeding patients
assisting with ordering meals.
applying restraints and bed alarms as directed
I&O
obtain vital signs (temp, pulse, respirations, blood pressure)
emptying drains and ostomy bags, recording output
changing non sterile dressing changes
assisting with after death care
pain assessment screening
uretheral catherization
venipuncture
blood sugar monitoring
assisting with observation of suicide patients

Performs procedures related to specimen collection, reporting abnormal values to RN.

sputum, stool, urine

Participates in Division HCAHPS and \Every Patient is My Patient\ goals.
Performs patient care rounds on patients at least every 2 hours.
Performs 12 Lead ECG
Performs other work duties as assigned
Responds to Code Blue/RRT
Transports supplies, mail , labs etc
Takes inventory of supplies and equipment, restocks as necessary.
Transport and/or stock medications.
Documents patient information as directed
Education
High school diploma or GED required.
Experience
In order to be eligible you must have one of the following:
C.N.A. Certification;
Current Nursing student with completion of nursing fundamentals course within 90 days of employment;
Previous documented work experience as a PCT, Nurse Assistant, EMT or Surgical Tech within the last 3 years or
