Immigration & Public Assistance Attorney & Visiting Assistant Professor of Law
Responsibilities : Will maintain a full caseload of medical-legal partnership client representation. Will co-teach a “law and medicine together” practicum course for Hofstra Law School students in the fall and spring semesters and handle casework throughout the year. Represent immigrant clients (documented and undocumented), specifically clients seeking: Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) status;, Asylum/refugee matters, Deportation, removal, exclusion or admissibility representation, Immigration status adjustments, U-visas, t-visas, and family-based immigration matters. Manage occasional representation of clients before the Executive Office for Immigration Review, Board of Immigration Appeals, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Determination of eligibility and securing Family Assistance, Safety Net Assistance and other emergency or special needs support as well as other benefit programs (e.g., SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare, unemployment insurance, Child Health Plus, or Essential Plan benefits in New York State). Occasional representation of clients in Fair Hearings before administrative law judges to appeal or modify benefit decisions. Work collaboratively with other medical-legal partnership attorneys as well as Northwell Health physicians, residents, patient navigators and social workers to assure client health, social and legal needs are met. Support design and development of training, community outreach, and education materials to clients, medical and legal students, and Northwell Health physicians, residents, faculty and staff. Work with Hofstra Law School faculty to conduct policy advocacy, including advocacy before legislative, administrative and judicial bodies to advance the interests of clients. Supervise law students who will practice under the supervision of the Immigration Attorney in the MLP clinic practices.
