Job Overview:
A distinguished law firm in Washington, DC, is seeking a detail-oriented Intellectual Property Associate with 1-3 years of experience in patent prosecution. The role focuses on supporting patent portfolios in chemical engineering and materials science technologies. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex IP matters involving technologies such as polymer science, medical devices, and filtration systems within a collaborative and client-focused practice group.

Duties:

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications in the U.S. and abroad

  • Draft patent opinions including freedom-to-operate, patentability, and invalidity analyses

  • Manage patent portfolios for diverse clients across industries

  • Collaborate with inventors, in-house counsel, and technical experts

  • Conduct legal research on IP and patent law issues

  • Assist with strategy development for IP protection and enforcement

  • Support due diligence and technology assessments in transactional contexts

Requirements:

  • 1-3 years of patent prosecution experience

  • Familiarity with technologies in material science, chemical engineering, polymers, and medical devices

  • Prior experience in both chemical and mechanical patent preparation/prosecution

  • Strong communication skills—both written and verbal

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-focused environment

  • Active Bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

Skills:

  • Technical proficiency in filtration, polymers, and materials science

  • Strong legal research and analytical abilities

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • Capacity to handle multiple assignments simultaneously

  • Strong client service orientation and professional demeanor

Job Location:

  • Washington, DC
