A distinguished law firm located in New York City is seeking an experienced Partner to lead its Employment Law practice. This opportunity is ideal for a legal professional with a strong record of attracting and maintaining client relationships, along with a significant portable book of business. The firm is dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusion within its ranks and encourages applications from candidates who share these values. The compensation structure is market-competitive and centers on business development efforts, with additional compensation for contributing to firm-wide projects. Small groups that meet the billing threshold are also welcome to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Employment Law practice, representing clients on a broad range of labor and employment matters, including discrimination claims, wage and hour disputes, wrongful termination, and compliance with federal and state labor laws.
  • Manage a client portfolio generating a minimum of $600,000 annually in portable business, with a focus on expanding the practice through client acquisition and retention.
  • Advise corporate and individual clients on employment contracts, severance agreements, workplace policies, and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide counsel to employers on risk management strategies, employee relations, and litigation avoidance measures.
  • Represent clients in employment-related litigation, arbitration, and before governmental agencies such as the EEOC and NLRB.
  • Supervise and mentor junior attorneys, providing guidance on case strategy and legal research to ensure the delivery of high-quality legal services.
  • Engage in active business development by leveraging personal networks, participating in industry events, and identifying new business opportunities to grow the firm’s employment law practice.
  • Contribute to the firm’s ongoing diversity initiatives, promoting an inclusive and culturally responsive workplace.

Requirements:

  • At least 8 years of experience specializing in Employment Law, with a proven record of success in both litigation and advisory capacities.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract and retain clients, with a portable book of business generating at least $600,000 annually.
  • Experience in handling complex employment disputes, including discrimination claims, wage and hour class actions, and high-stakes negotiations.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to mentor junior attorneys and lead litigation teams effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex legal arguments to clients, courts, and regulatory bodies clearly and persuasively.
  • Deep understanding of federal and state labor and employment laws, as well as industry trends affecting employer compliance.

Education and Certifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the New York State Bar (or eligibility for reciprocity).
  • Additional certifications in employment law or alternative dispute resolution are a plus.

Desired Skills:

  • Expertise in drafting and negotiating employment agreements, restrictive covenants, and severance packages.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking abilities, particularly in assessing employment risk and minimizing legal exposure for clients.
  • Experience in managing class and collective actions, particularly wage and hour cases.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a focus on expanding the Employment Law practice and contributing to the firm’s broader business development goals.
  • A commitment to client service, ensuring timely and effective legal solutions tailored to each client’s unique needs.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Compensation package centered on origination of business, with additional consideration for work on firm-wide matters.
  • Comprehensive benefits plan, including 401(k) retirement savings, health and dental insurance, disability coverage, and a subsidized gym membership.
