A respected law firm in Grand Rapids, Michigan is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Associate Patent Attorney to join its growing Intellectual Property team. The ideal candidate will contribute to global IP strategy through patent prosecution, analysis, and litigation support.

Job Overview

This position involves drafting and prosecuting patent applications aligned with clients' global intellectual property strategies. The role also includes conducting freedom-to-operate and landscape analyses, preparing patentability and infringement opinions, and supporting IP-related litigation and transactional practices. Duties

• Draft and prosecute patent applications in support of clients' global IP strategies

• Conduct freedom-to-operate and landscape analyses

• Prepare patentability, invalidity, and non-infringement opinions

• Support IP-related litigation and transactional matters

• Collaborate with attorneys across practice groups in a general practice setting

Requirements

• 1–4 years of patent law experience

• Background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related discipline

• Strong attention to detail and the ability to handle complex subject matter

• Capacity to work independently and in team environments

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Education

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

• Excellent academic credentials preferred

Certifications

• Admission to the Michigan Bar

• Registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (U.S. Patent Bar)

Skills

• In-depth knowledge of patent law and prosecution procedures

• Strong technical writing and analytical skills

• Ability to interpret and translate complex technical concepts

• Familiarity with IP litigation and transactional frameworks
