Criminal Defense Attorney
A Portland-based law firm is actively seeking a dedicated Criminal Defense Attorney to join its public defense team. This full-time role focuses on representing court-appointed clients throughout all stages of the criminal process. The position is part of a collective bargaining unit and offers a dynamic, mission-driven environment emphasizing collaborative legal service delivery.
Deliver high-quality legal defense for clients facing criminal charges at all phases, including arraignment, trial, and post-sentencing
Engage in strategic collaboration with internal support professionals, including investigators, case managers, and client advocates
Maintain proactive communication and calendaring practices in coordination with assigned legal assistants
Advise clients on legal options, case strategy, procedural expectations, and ongoing case progress
Active or pending licensure with the Oregon State Bar, or eligibility to obtain Oregon Bar membership within a reasonable period
Demonstrated passion and effectiveness in defending the rights of public defense clients
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively across a multidisciplinary team
Familiarity with criminal law, legal procedures, and court systems
Commitment to social justice and equity in criminal defense practice
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
Admission to the Oregon State Bar (or intent to gain admission promptly upon hire)
Strong legal research and writing abilities
Effective courtroom advocacy and negotiation skills
Client-focused communication style
Organizational aptitude with attention to detail in managing case files and deadlines
Adaptability in fast-paced, high-volume caseload settings
