Senior Staff Attorney - Voting Rights
The candidate will build and lead new litigation and policy advocacy to protect and expand voting rights in Southern California and throughout the state. Will also provide technical assistance to community groups and develop advocacy to expand voting rights and promote voting and civic participation specific to the region. Develop and litigate state and federal cases; create and implement policy advocacy campaigns and campaigns to increase voting and civic participation; engage in public education; and provide technical assistance on voting rights, voter registration, and civic participation. Litigation, advocacy, and public education campaigns might include: stopping and preventing discriminatory voting practices, ensuring fair and nonbiased districting practices, making sure counties’ moves from local polling places to vote centers does not create barriers to voting, expanding the right to vote and civic participation for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, ensuring transparency and civic participation by government bodies, and educating people about their right to vote and civic participation. Will also work with other attorneys, policy advocates, organizers from other SoCal Projects and communications staff as needed and when intersectional issues arise. Be supervised by the Director of the First Amendment, Government Transparency and Voting Rights Project within the SoCal Advocacy department. Investigate, develop and litigate high-impact cases at the trial and appellate level in federal and state courts. Manage litigation teams, serve as co-counsel, and work in conjunction with other legal, policy, and organizing staff within the SoCal, the other two California affiliates, and partner organizations. Serve as a policy expert and advocate on voting rights and civic participation issues in support of legislation and other campaigns, with responsibilities including public speaking, media interviews, outreach and know your rights presentations, as well as writing op-eds, newsletter articles, and reports. Conduct outreach, advocacy, and provide technical assistance to public officials and government bodies. Provide technical support and strategic leadership to community groups, advocates and organizers in the region. Organize and lead community and stakeholder education events. Run trainings for activists and organizers. Help build and maintain coalitions.
