Posting DetailsFull Time Diabetes Education Chesterfield Campus Description The Diabetes Nurse Educator applies in-depth advanced level knowledge of nursing to deliver the principles of self-management to individuals with diabetes. As a consultant, the Diabetes Nurse Educator will maintain an advanced level of clinical and theoretical expertise in order to serve as a resource to colleagues, allied personnel, physicians and consumers of health care within the hospital or community. As a Registered Professional Nurse, this individual is responsible for practicing in accordance with Nursing Standards and Hospital Policies, performing duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.
Principle Accountabilities: Implements activities necessary to develop or reinforce the knowledge/skills of nursing/medical staff. Conducts staff inservices on new diabetes protocols, equipment and management procedures, answering questions as well as conducting formal teaching programs. Supervises and trains staff in working with patients on insulin pumps in accordance with insulin pump protocols. Assists in keeping physicians updated on new diabetes management concepts through memos and distribution of literature upon request; assists nursing staff in identifying individual patient learning needs, developing teaching plans and securing appropriate teaching materials.
Demonstrates a sound advanced knowledge base in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient needs. When indicated, this includes cultural and religious practices, emotional barriers, desire and motivation to learn, physical and/or cognitive limitations and language barriers. Works with Physicians, the Clinical Dietitian, Social Service and Home Care Coordinator to develop, evaluate and integrate appropriate patient education with discharge planning process decreasing length of stay in the hospital and promoting follow-up in the immediate discharge period. Responds appropriately to phone calls from patients/family members regarding diabetes management problems referring call to physician when necessary.
Assists in developing/promoting hospital-wide cooperation and support for diabetes education activities by involving and consulting with hospital staff in problem solving and crisis intervention. Communicates with other disciplines/departments to develop/ facilitate interdisciplinary planning/implementation teams. Serves on various committees.
Assesses local and national trends in patient/family education to promote effectiveness of hospital program. Maintains liaison with diabetes pharmaceutical companies. Represents and communicates hospital policies on health education at community, state and national level.
Demonstrates effective skills with use of computer (ie:Cerner, Powerchart). Documentation reflects patient assessment, teaching plan, family involvement where appropriate, special patient needs (ie: impaired vision, altered dexterity) etc.

Education BSN Required. License - Certification - Registration (Text Only)Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri Required. Certification as a Diabetes Nurse Educator preferred. Experience Diabetes Education experience required A minimum of one year experience as a professional nurse in which management competency has been demonstrated. Pursues programs of continuing education, updates and maintains professional knowledge and competency related to areas of responsibility. The assessment, care and treatment provided by the Diabetes Nurse Educator will be consistent with the specific age related needs of the patient. The Diabetes Nurse Educator is competent to care for patient age groups with major focus on adult and geriatric patients. Current certification in a Basic Life Support required or course will need to be completed during orientation classes, prior to working on the nursing divisions. COMPETENCY WILL BE VALIDATED AT LEAST ONCE EVERY THREE YEARS. STANDARDS DENOTING AN ANNUAL OR MORE FREQUENT COMPETENCY VALIDATION ARE LOCATED IN THE SCOPE OF PRACTICE. COMPLETION OF HOSPITAL SAFETY PROGRAMS ARE REQUIRED ANNUALLY. PARTICIPATION IN A BLS PROGRAM IS REQUIRED EVERY TWO YEARS.
