An AmLaw-ranked intellectual property law firm is seeking a USPTO-registered Patent Agent with a background in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field. This role sits within a high-performing Chemistry & Life Sciences Patent Prosecution team and offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge innovations at the intersection of software and biology. The ideal candidate will possess advanced technical knowledge, patent prosecution experience, and excellent communication skills. This is a full-time, in-office role offering long-term career potential in a supportive, non-partnership track setting with a reduced billable hour expectation.
Location:
Winston-Salem, NC
Duties:
Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications in fields including bioinformatics, computational biology, AI, and related technologies
Analyze scientific disclosures and develop strategic IP protection plans
Work closely with inventors, scientists, and legal teams to manage robust patent portfolios
Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate, and due diligence assessments
Provide technical input for legal opinions and patent strategy discussions
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of patent laws, USPTO procedures, and advancements in relevant technologies
Requirements:
Minimum 3 years of patent prosecution experience in biotechnology, bioinformatics, or computational biology
Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical and writing capabilities
Prior experience working with innovations combining biology and software is preferred
Technical writing skills and prior exposure to scientific publishing or R&D documentation a plus
Writing samples and academic transcripts may be requested during the interview process
Education:
Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D. preferred) in:
Bioinformatics
Computational Biology
Artificial Intelligence
Molecular Biology or closely related scientific/technical field
Certifications:
Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
Skills:
Deep understanding of biotechnology and software-related innovations
Proficiency in patent drafting, legal writing, and patent portfolio strategy
Excellent verbal and written communication
Ability to work collaboratively with legal professionals and scientists
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and organized
