The selected candidate will handle a mix of legal functions with a strong focus on prosecuting criminal cases while also engaging in civil matters relevant to local government operations. This role involves travel to regional court jurisdictions outside the Twin Cities metro area.

Duties:

  • Represent municipalities in criminal proceedings involving misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors

  • Appear in court for trials, pre-trials, and hearings in cities such as Winona and New Ulm

  • Conduct legal research and prepare filings for both prosecution and civil matters

  • Participate in administrative hearings related to municipal code enforcement or licensing issues

  • Advise local government clients on civil issues, including ordinance interpretation, contracts, and regulatory compliance

  • Coordinate with city officials, law enforcement, and court personnel

  • Draft legal memoranda, reports, and correspondence for public sector clients

Requirements:

  • 0-3 years of post-law school legal experience

  • Admission to practice law in Minnesota, or eligibility for admission upon offer

  • Familiarity with criminal law procedures, municipal governance, or public interest law

  • Willingness to travel within Minnesota for court appearances and client meetings

  • Strong verbal advocacy and written communication skills

  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and varied assignments

  • Professionalism in interactions with public officials and legal peers

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Active license (or eligibility for admission) to practice law in the State of Minnesota

Skills:

  • Knowledge of criminal court processes and trial preparation

  • Understanding of municipal legal operations and statutory interpretation

  • Research proficiency using legal databases and resources

  • Effective courtroom presence and ability to argue motions and conduct examinations
