Human Trafficking Staff Attorney/Case Manager
Responsibilities: Provide comprehensive legal services, addressing the range of legal issues that arise from a client’s victimization. Comprehensive legal services will include immigration assistance, assistance with civil legal remedies, such as family law (including divorce, custody, and child support); emancipation, dependency or guardianship, and family reunification); protective orders; employment law (including wage and hour claims); housing and public benefits access; crime victims’ rights enforcement; navigating and understanding the criminal justice process and legal resources available to victims. Provide legal representation of clients in proceedings before the Alaska Court System, Department of Homeland Security, the Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Includes appearances at hearings, preparation of witnesses, legal research, and the preparation of briefs and other pleadings. Manage case files in accordance with program policy and procedures. Work with paralegals and volunteers when they are assisting in your client-related work. Includes oversight of case management, telephone assistance and preparation of documents. Meet deadlines imposed by state court judges, the Executive Office of Immigration Review, the Department of Homeland Security and the Supervising Attorney of the Alaska Immigration Justice Project. Provide consultations and prescreen clients to review client eligibility for human trafficking services. Participate in outreach and education activities to immigrant community, social service, legal services and health care providers and attorneys to increase awareness about human trafficking. When appropriate work with law enforcement officers to advocate for protection and safety for human trafficking clients. Provide comprehensive case management supportive services for human trafficking victims to assist with housing, public assistance benefits, employment services, mental health services, physical health care services and any other services to assist the client to meet her/his needs. Provide legal representation of human trafficking clients in other courts when material to immigration, family law and other legal issues related to the crime victimization of clients. Develop culturally and linguistically appropriate resource material for human trafficking victims, if needed. Perform general office duties, such as faxing, copying and filing. Participate in weekly staff meetings. Maintain case statistics for reports to funders. Maintain regular and reliable attendance. Other duties as assigned.
