A distinguished law firm in Washington, DC, is partnering with a legal recruiting agency to identify a technically adept and detail-driven Patent Agent. This role is tailored for candidates with a background in biomedical, mechanical, or chemical engineering, seeking to support a thriving practice focused on patent strategy, drafting, and prosecution. The position offers exposure to complex technologies and collaboration with seasoned legal professionals in the medtech sector.

Duties:

  • Perform prior art searches to assess patentability and freedom to operate

  • Evaluate patents, scientific literature, and technical documents

  • Support patent attorneys in drafting and prosecuting patent applications

  • Prepare responses to office actions and support other stages of the patent lifecycle

  • Engage in patent portfolio development and client advisory matters

  • Participate in litigation-related patent analysis as needed

Requirements:

  • At least 1 year of experience in a law firm or comparable legal setting

  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to learn quickly in a collaborative environment

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Familiarity with patent databases and legal research tools

  • Strong organizational and analytical abilities

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related technical discipline

  • Advanced degrees (MS or PhD) are advantageous

Certifications:

  • Registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as a Patent Agent, or eligibility to sit for the USPTO registration exam

Skills:

  • Comprehensive understanding of mechanical and biomedical systems

  • Technical writing expertise with attention to legal and scientific accuracy

  • Strong interpersonal skills to coordinate with attorneys and clients

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
