Assistant Director, Public Interest Law
The candidate works under the general supervision of the Administrative Director of the Center for Public Interest Law to provide editing, publishing, and strategic communications support for the academic programs of all three centers in the Public Interest Law department at the Law School: the Center for Public Interest Law (CPIL), the Children’s Advocacy Institute (CAI) and the Energy Policy Initiatives Center (EPIC) (collectively, “Public Interest Law”). Works under the general supervision of the Administrative Director of the Center for Public Interest Law to provide editing, publishing, and strategic communications support for the academic programs of all three centers in the Public Interest Law department at the Law School: the Center for Public Interest Law (CPIL), the Children’s Advocacy Institute (CAI) and the Energy Policy Initiatives Center (EPIC) (collectively, “Public Interest Law”). Plays a significant role in editing and preparing for publication Public Interest Law’s student-drafted journals, reports and other publications. Develops and delivers compelling, strategically sound content for Public Interest Law’s external and internal audiences, and oversees writing and content strategy for all three websites in the Public Interest Law department; maintains editorial quality and monitors website text and information for accuracy and consistency. Collaborates with Public Interest Law faculty, administration, alumni and vendors to produce 15 to 20 communication projects each year. Writes press releases and news-related web content and prepares, edits, and distributes regular newsletters to Public Interest Law alumni, donors, and community partners. The Assistant Director collaborates with the University’s creative service department to ensure the proper use of the school’s graphic standards. The Assistant Director works under the general supervision of the Administrative Director of the Center for Public Interest Law, and is expected to exercise independent judgment on a variety of matters. May work directly with other Public Interest Law directors, the law school Dean, faculty or department heads on special projects. Provides assignments to the office’s work-study students and external vendors (e.g., printers, photographers, videographers, graphic designers, web design firms, mail houses and freelance writers). Understand the Public Interest Law department’s editorial and communication priorities; develop relevant content, edit, format, and publish department publications. This includes the following: Perform substantive and grammatical editing of student-written journal articles in the California Regulatory Law Reporter and other academic reports and publications produced by CPIL, CAI and EPIC. Provide feedback and support to students working on Public Interest Law publications and projects. Provide graphic design and formatting services for all Public Interest Law publications consistent with USD’s branding and graphics standards. Coordinate with Legal Research Center, Copley Library, and outside vendors to prepare Public Interest Law content for publication on USD’s digital Institutional Repository. Interview alumni, faculty, administrators, staff, students and guest speakers to research and compile information to create content and themes important to the Public Interest Law department’s and the Law School’s messaging and priorities. Write and edit articles for various printed and digital communications, including regular communications with Public Interest Law alumni. Draft content for Public Interest Law’s collateral pieces (includes recruiting materials for prospective law students, bulletins, brochures, invitations, direct mail postcards and e-vites). Coordinate with the Department of External Relations to write press releases, and produce additional communications pieces relative to Public Interest Law and the Law School. Oversee the Public Interest Law department’s social media strategy across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and other social media channels that reach the Public Interest Law department’s respective audiences. Coordinate the maintenance and development of all three centers’ websites with internal and outside/IT resources. Regularly and independently draft and prepare content and updated information for all three centers’ websites, and ensure the content is routinely reviewed and updated. Establish and maintain a social media presence for all Public Interest Law centers, and assist with developing messages that are consistent with the overall communication and branding strategy. Assist in the Public Interest Law department’s development efforts to raise financial support for all three Centers’ work and academic programming. Research prospective funders. Prepare grant proposals. Facilitate annual solicitation letters to alumni and supporters. Coordinate opportunities for funders to interact with students and learn more about Public Interest Law department endeavors. Provide general administrative support for the Public Interest Law department’s litigation work, including amicus curiae briefs with various courts. Assist in editing and formatting legal briefs and filings. Cite check and fact check contents of legal documents and filings. Research court rules and ensure proper filing and service of filings.
