A law firm seeks an experienced Intellectual Property Attorney to join its team in Albany, NY. This position offers a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility for two days of remote work per week based on business needs.
Duties
Safeguard and manage clients’ IP portfolios, including trademarks, copyrights, and patents
Oversee domestic and international trademark registration and maintenance
Coordinate copyright registrations and handle related administrative filings
Draft, negotiate, and finalize commercial agreements involving IP assets (e.g., software licensing, SaaS contracts, and technology transfers)
Advise on licensing of patent, trademark, and copyright rights to third parties
Conduct IP due diligence in connection with business combinations and other transactional matters
Collaborate with clients in various sectors—businesses, academic and research institutions, and nonprofits—to develop IP protection strategies
Provide guidance on best practices for IP asset development, acquisition, and enforcement
Support internal teams by reviewing and advising on IP-related provisions in broader commercial agreements
Requirements
Minimum of seven years of substantive IP experience in a law firm or in-house setting
Proven track record in trademark portfolio management and copyright filings
Demonstrated ability to draft and negotiate complex IP licensing agreements (including software and technology arrangements)
Experience conducting intellectual property due diligence for mergers and acquisitions
Admission to practice law in New York State
Education
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
Certifications
Active membership in the New York State Bar
Skills
Strong drafting and negotiation capabilities, particularly in IP-related contracts
In-depth understanding of domestic and international trademark and copyright law
Ability to conduct thorough IP due diligence and present findings to clients
Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail in reviewing patent, trademark, and copyright materials
Effective communicator able to advise diverse clients on IP strategy and risk management
Capacity to work independently while also collaborating with colleagues and client teams
