Legal Director
The candidate will develop, coordinate, and lead the strategic direction and implementation of Learning Rights direct legal services program in alignment with Learning Rights’ Values, Vision and Mission; Oversee and collaboratively develop program policies and practices for the legal services program work, including case handling protocols, document management, electronic case management and timekeeping tools, conflicts of interest, and volunteer and intern management; Take primary responsibility for filing and coordinating, with outside counsel if necessary, federal and state civil litigation as “impact” cases for special education and civil rights matters; Take primary responsibility for assigning legal staff duties, salaries, and terms of office in consultation with Executive Director; Take primary responsibility for hiring and firing of all legal personnel under his/her supervision with the advice and counsel of the Executive Director. To the extent that there is a disagreement regarding legal staff hiring and firing, no agreement, the Executive Director and the Legal Director may request that the Board Chair make a final decision. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Executive Director and Legal Director shall work in good faith to resolve any differences prior to requesting Board action; Work with allies and partners within and outside the legal community to advance strategy and impact goals; Work collaboratively with Executive Team and Board, including assistance in budget development and stewardship of resources; Collaboratively create and ensure leadership and professional development opportunities are equitably distributed to staff; Represent LRLC at state and national level conferences/meetings in coordination with the Executive Director; Assist in identification of legal issues affecting client communities and help fashion effective approaches to ameliorate the education harm; Provide advocacy training in the targeted community and participate in community outreach as necessary; Assist Executive Director and the Director of TIGER as needed with TIGER Program; Collaborate with Executive Director regarding applying for foundational grants; Support and participate in development and fundraising activities, publicity and social media outreach, including representing LRLC at fundraising events and during fund-solicitation campaigns; Serve on standing Board committees, strategic planning committees, and task force groups.
