Legal Aid Senior Supervising Attorney
The candidate will oversee and coordinate the work of one or more of the following practice areas: elder law (involving legal matters that affect the health, safety, and well-being of seniors, including eviction defense and other homelessness prevention; access to Medicare and other benefits; and safety from abuse and exploitation); employment law (including unemployment benefits; wage and hour claims; and discrimination); Social Security matters (for applicants for and recipients of SSI and SSDI benefits); and education law (focusing on assisting students with issues involving Individualized Education Programs; school discipline including disproportionate suspensions and expulsions of children of color; language access; and other matters specifically affecting low-income students). Will directly supervise the legal work of the advocates in the various practice areas. Will also assist with coordinating the training of staff and the community; keep abreast of legal developments in the areas of practice and serve as a legal resource for the program; and co-counsel with staff in complex and/or systemic cases. Also work with Managing Attorneys in conducting annual performance reviews of staff, and assist in writing grant applications and reports. Admission to MA Bar or entitlement to practice under a MA practice rule required. Must have 7+ years of experience practicing law, with significant experience in one or more of the designated practice areas. Candidate seeking to supervise the elder law practice must have significant housing litigation experience focusing on eviction defense and other landlord-tenant issues arising for elders. Experience with low-income populations; ability to relate effectively to a diverse clientele; and strong supervision and communication skills required.
