RESEARCH & WRITING SPECIALIST

FEDERAL DEFENDER SERVICES OF IDAHO, BOISE HEADQUARTERS

Federal Defender Services of Idaho is now accepting applications for a Research and Writing Attorney position in the Boise Headquarters. The attorney in this position will be responsible for writing briefs, motions, appeals, sentencing memos, petitions for certiorari, and legal memoranda for review by the Defender and staff attorneys. This position requires excellent research and writing skills; experience in computer-assisted legal research; word processing capability; time management skills; and the ability to understand and manage complex factual and legal issues, as well as to communicate effectively with our clients.

Federal Defender Services of Idaho is the Community Defender Organization (see 18 U.S.C.§ 3006A(g)(2)(B)) for the District of Idaho. The organization’s main office is in Boise, Idaho with a branch in Pocatello, Idaho and a Capital Habeas Unit also in Boise. Attorneys provide representation in the pertinent federal district court, as well as the Ninth Circuit and U.S. Supreme Court. The Boise Headquarters is currently staffed by six attorneys, two investigators, an interpreter, and related support staff.

Boise offers an ideal mix of vibrant city life and plentiful outdoor recreation. Downtown contains a variety of local restaurants, museums, independent theaters, and farmers markets. With three major rivers (the Boise, the Payette, and the Snake), the Rocky Mountains, as well as over 130 miles of trails in the surrounding foothills, the Boise area offers world class mountain biking, hiking, paddling, rock climbing, and fishing. In the winter, skiing is just a short drive away.

REQUIREMENTS: J.D. degree from an accredited law school. Must be an active member, in good standing, of a state bar (not necessarily the Idaho bar) and be committed to indigent defense. Prefer 1-5 years of experience as a practicing attorney; demonstrated commitment to indigent defense; excellent academic credentials, law review or journal, and/or judicial clerkship experience.
