Gallup poll shows that Americans are in favor of jobless benefits; EmploymentCrossing finds 694,000 jobs.

But only 48% of the respondents thought that extending the benefits for the long-term unemployed was ''very important''. 28% of the respondents thought it was ''somewhat important'' and the remaining 24% thought it was ''not at all important''. The poll has an error margin of ±4%. The benefits are going to expire on November 30 for around 800,000 Americans and then throughout December for another 1.2 million people.
House Republicans on November 18 shot down a bill meant for the long-term unemployed. The bill would have extended their unemployment benefits for another three months. The reason that the GOP gave out was that the $12 billion price tag attached to it would just add to the deficit.
The bill failed when Democrats tried to get it passed under fast-track procedures where they could not muster a two-thirds majority required. Democrats could still bring the bill to the House floor under regular and more time-consuming debate rules that would allow the bill to pass with a simple majority. But it would still face obstacles in the Senate, where Republicans are poised to block the bill if it does not include offsetting spending cuts.
