Pasadena, CA — The number of jobless claims have hit a two month high for the week ending January 8.

The jobless claims applications rose to 445,000, up by 35,000, from the previous week. The reason given was that laid off people didn't file during the holidays and most of the unemployment centers were also working fewer hours in the final week of December. The government has said that the increase was because of administrative backlogs.

The total number of people who received unemployment benefits stood at 3.88 million for the week ending on January 1. This was a drop of 248,000 people after seasonal adjustments. The unemployment rate stood at 9.4% for December, which most analysts had already predicted was due to seasonal hiring and people not filing for jobless benefits during Christmas time.

But things seem to be turning around. There were 3.25 million job postings and 14.5 million unemployed, which works out to be a ratio of 4.6 million applicants for every job posting.

A. Harrison Barnes, CEO of EmploymentCrossing, says that he has seen more job openings in the second week of January. ''By now, businesses are back in full swing and their HR departments are going through the backlog of resumes that they had gathered in the last four weeks.'' EmploymentCrossing, a job aggregator website, has been able to compile over 558,000 jobs in its database in the last seven days.
