Pasadena, CA — ADP's latest monthly jobs report reveals that the private nonfarm sector added a net total of only 38,000 new jobs in May.

Small and medium sized businesses kept adding jobs in substantial numbers. But it was layoffs from large businesses and manufacturing that brought down the total number. ADP's data came from its U.S. business clients, which averaged over 340,000 business employing 21 million Americans.

The total number of new jobs created since November has grown to 765,000. There are just under 139 million Americans in the labor force. But the participation rate has dropped to a low 64.2 percent. This is the lowest rate since 1984. When this factor is taken in account, the drop in the unemployment rate does not look that impressive.

The ratio of job seekers for every job opening is 4.3 to 1. Job openings are also still running 35 percent below the pre-recession high. Labor participation rates are falling across all major demographic groups. For men over the age of 20, it's now 74 percent compared to the peak of 89 percent in 1952.

The explanation given for this is that a lot of factory jobs which did not require a college education have disappeared. Some of the workers who have left the workforce are now getting by on government benefits, including being on disability. These people could previously work because of accommodations but now cannot find employers willing to do that. The share of women and teenagers looking for work has fallen too.

EmploymentCrossing, a job aggregator site, has been able to find over 146,000 jobs in just a day. The sectors with the most jobs on EmploymentCrossing are healthcare (24,000+), managerial (22,000+), information technology (20,000+), and retail (17,000+).
