August 18, 2012 — Pasadena, CA — Workers at the Foster Farms Dairy in Salem received bad news today when it was announced that the company will be ceasing production at its ice cream plant. The plant shutdown will cause 100 people to lose their jobs. This breaks down to 75 full-time and 25 part-time employees. However, some of these employees may find work at other Foster Farms plants. The layoffs are set to begin at the beginning of October of this year. It is expected that this cutdown in staff will be a permanent decision. The Salem location is mostly involved the production of Deluxe Ice Cream, a small ice cream brand that was acquired by Foster Farms in 2010. Apparently, this plant was never updated to modern standards and Foster Farms felt it would be too costly if they were to invest in updating the facility.
