The budget will be cut by $12 million to close a budget gap that was prompted largely by a $9.3 million cut in funds provided by the state.

Healthcare and retirement costs have also increased, which is thought to be to blame for the budget shortfall as well. For a time, the shortfall was met through increases in tuition, which increased the school's revenue; however, it's simply not enough now. As a result, several positions will now remain unfilled and several positions will be cut. The travel budget and assistantships will also be cut and a vacant property will be leased to a third party.

The lay offs make up 7.5% of the University of New Orleans' workforce with an expected savings of $3.3 million.
