National Association of Home Builders Find Job Openings Highest since November 2007, EmploymentCrossing Job Openings Confirm Recent Surge of Jobs in Construction Sector

December 18, 2012 — Pasadena, California — The latest Eye on the Economy Newsletter of the National Association of Home Builders titled this Friday, Dec 14 issue as “Construction Growing, So Where Are The Jobs?” mentions that new single-family homes continue to post solid rates of growth increasing 3.6 percent on a month-to-month basis since mid-2009.

The NAHB newsletter also remarks that existing home sales continue to trend better with the National Association of Realtors reporting that the Pending Home Sales Index (PHSI) accelerating by 5.2 percent in October. The NAR also predicted that home sales should surge in November and December.

Commenting on the recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report, the NAHB newsletter says, “it is surprising that the BLS data do not show significant gains in construction sector employment … and over the last 12 months the home building sector had added only 5,000 jobs.” However, the NAHB comments the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) data for October indicates “a surge in construction sector open positions.”

The NAHB notes, quoting from the JOLTS data that the total number of open positions in home building was “the highest since November 2007. And the open position rate … was the highest since April 2007.”

The job openings available on EmploymentCrossing in the construction sector affirm that the number of jobs in the construction sector is definitely growing, and the number of new jobs in the construction sector being listed is greater than ever since the recession. On last count, the number of total construction sector job openings available on EmploymentCrossing was 7658, out of which 6387 new construction jobs had been added in the past month; 2387 construction jobs added in the past seven days, and 590 new construction job openings listed on 13-14 December.

The CEO of EmploymentCrossing, Harrison Barnes said, “The recent surge in construction job openings being posted, confirm the National Association of Realtors’ prediction of home sales surging in November and December, and the concurrence of the NAHB that construction job openings are highest since November 2007.”
