Commerce Dept. Reports Increase in Orders for Durable Goods, Spurring Hiring on ManufacturingCrossing.com

June 29, 2013   |  PDF version  PDF version

Pasadena, CA – Manufactured goods orders, shipments, and inventories were up across the board in May, according to a Commerce Department report this week. With auto production and sales leading the way, the manufacturing industry’s growth has contributed to stronger recruitment efforts on ManufacturingCrossing.com.

The Commerce Department reported orders for manufactured durable goods rose in May by 3.6 percent, or $8 billion, to a total of $231 billion. By and large, transportation goods were responsible for the majority of the growth, making up 2.9 percent of the increase in orders last month. The fact that Americans are again feeling confident enough to spend on big-ticket items like new automobiles reflected the growth in spending power. With more money in their pockets, vehicle sales continued to be strong, and auto manufacturers continued to work round-the-clock to fill orders and make shipment deadlines.

Major auto companies like GM, Chrysler, and Ford made announcements this year that they were expanding assembly production and shortening or forgoing the traditional summer shutdown, due to strong consumer demand.

Increased orders have contributed to hiring growth in the manufacturing sector. On ManufacturingCrossing.com, a job site for jobs in the manufacturing sector, the primary demand was in production and engineering. At the time that this release was written, the site advertised 5,200 manufacturing production jobs and 4,700 manufacturing engineering jobs. Most employers required degrees in industrial, mechanical, or manufacturing engineering, or equivalent working experience.

“After the auto bailouts just a few years ago, U.S. auto manufacturing has made a tremendous turnaround,” said Harrison Barnes, CEO of ManufacturingCrossing.com. “Auto production is translating into the majority of the jobs being created in manufacturing right now.”
