EmploymentCrossing Reports Strong Demand for Teenager Jobs This Year

July 19, 2013   |  PDF version  PDF version

There is a strong demand for teenager jobs this year, says EmploymentCrossing. The website reports that 1220 active openings still require to be filled, of which 950 new jobs were created in the past week itself. According to Harrison Barnes, Chief Executive Officer at Employment Crossing, "teenager jobs have made strides in many sectors displacing older workers from the start of 2013." Job options have dimmed for teens in retail outlets and malls. But, they are finding several jobs in non-traditional areas, including positions at bowling alleys with arcades, pools with water slides, trampoline centers and movie theaters offering full-service dining.

So far, this year, about 994,000 teens between 16-19 years have found summer jobs in the U.S., as per the Bureau of Labor Statistics figures examined by outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. The figures are not seasonally-adjusted, but a year-over-year comparisons show that the U.S. jobs market has the ability to absorb many more teenagers and 2013 will prove to be a better year than 2012 for teen jobs.

Expressing his views on concerns related to older jobseekers, Barnes explains that though the jobs situation has tightened a bit, 'it is not exactly disgraceful.' There are many employment opportunities out there. However, it is the excessively flexible approach adopted by many unemployed people while finding new jobs, which is leading them to get hired in low paying jobs or those positions for which they are actually over-qualified. The by-product of this is the development of negative job attitudes and eventually more underemployment or unemployment afresh.

In the study - 'The consequences of flexible job search behavior: from unemployment to underemployment?' - scheduled to be presented at the upcoming annual meeting of the Academy of Management, researchers Sarah Vansteenkiste, MarijkeVerbruggen, and Luc Sels of the University of Leuven in Belgium, explain how a flexible job search causes people to obtain less sustainable jobs or career paths and develop negative job attitudes. These behavioral changes induce individuals to leave their jobs and become jobless again. Therefore, Barnes suggests that jobseekers of all ages must make 'focused job searches.'

EmploymentCrossing is a tool at the hands of job seekers that helps them to make focused job searches. Presently 2,228,009 jobs on EmploymentCrossing are awaiting takers. These are grouped under job categories and specific locations. Now, it is time that jobseekers change the way they search for jobs and take active steps to benefit from technology and innovation to alter their economic standing.

Testimonial of the Week

What I liked about the service is that it had such a comprehensive collection of jobs! I was using a number of sites previously and this took up so much time, but in joining EmploymentCrossing, I was able to stop going from site to site and was able to find everything I needed on EmploymentCrossing.
