EmploymentCrossing Reports Surge in California Jobs

July 29, 2013   |  PDF version  PDF version

Pasadena, CA - Jobs growth continues to improve in California according to the latest EmploymentCrossing research data. The company website reveals 219,036 active jobs in the state and claims that the number is subject to increase further. This finding is in line to the monthly Regional and State Employment and Unemployment report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on 18 July. The report indicates that the state's unemployment rate has slid to 8.5%, which is good news. But, the California jobs report shows that a large number of positions created in June were in low-paying industries. Of these many were part-time jobs. The unemployment rate has only slightly decreased from May to June, yet it is a notable 2.1 point drop from June 2012.

Studying the job market, EmploymentCrossing finds that micro-businesses have injected many opportunities into the economy. Likewise, despite the lackluster sales throughout the first half of 2013, retail trade has added about 7,900 jobs in the market. Further, there has been a rapid growth in occupations in the healthcare and the STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math) sectors.

In California, jobs in health care and social assistance, professional services as well as scientific and technical areas are forecasted to grow 27 percent until 2020. These sectors will add about 800,000 jobs in all. A similar fast paced growth in housing and construction, high tech, biotech, agriculture, entertainment, and manufacturing sectors is expected to create 6.3 million overall opportunities in the state by 2020. But most jobs will require a Bachelor's degree or better.

A state-wide search on the EmploymentCrossing website reveals about 32,000 healthcare jobs, over 33,700 jobs in Information Technology, more than 23,600 engineering jobs, almost 24,550 sales jobs, about 20,885 blue-collar jobs, more than 21,600 recruitment jobs and about 19,370 retail jobs. Ongoing hiring activity on EmploymentCrossing, coupled with the latest BLS release data and findings from the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation's 2013-2014 Mid-Year Economic Forecast, leaves the job-opening research institution with enough to offer a solid take on the state of California's economy. As Harrison Barnes, Chief Executive Officer at EmploymentCrossing puts it, "Things are improving steadily in California with growth in private sector expected to truly take off in 2014."
