An education consultant plans and coordinates education policies and advises the best career options depending on the student's inherent capabilities. An education consultant also establishes guidelines for educational programs and for training teaching personnel.

Other duties include participating or conducting workshops, committees, and conferences related to the upcoming strategies, reforms, and policies. An education consultant also conducts research in teaching techniques and training methods. Education consultants are mostly subjected to act as a consultant in specific areas such as elementary education, career counseling, or technical career consulting.

An education consultant is required to be a graduate along with a diploma or degree related to education counseling. An education consultant should have ample knowledge of prevailing policies, procedures, laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the related field. Experience in training students in shaping their careers and knowledge of education philosophy, terms, and techniques may be an advantage.
