A pharmacist is a health practitioner who specializes in dispensing drugs prescribed by physicians and providing information to patients about their side effects and use. A pharmacist understands both the composition of medicines and the laws that regulate their manufacture and sale. A pharmacist keeps confidential computerized records of patients’ drug therapies in order to prevent harmful drug interactions. A pharmacist in a health care facility dispenses medications and advises the medical staff on the selection and effects of drugs. A pharmacist counsels hospitalized patients on the use of drugs before the patients are discharged. A pharmacist also advises patients about general health topics such as diet, exercise, and stress management, and provides information on products such as durable medical equipment or home healthcare supplies. A pharmacist provides specialized services to help patients with conditions such as diabetes, asthma, or high blood pressure. Some pharmacists are also trained to administer vaccinations.

A pharmacist job requires a BS degree in pharmacy and two to four years of pharmaceutical experience. A pharmacist must have scientific aptitude and good communication skills. A pharmacist should have the ability to think on his or her feet, act quickly, and work as part of a team. A pharmacist should also be able to establish and maintain a variety of records and be able to create and preserve strong and effective working relationships.
