Garment Designer Jobs

A garment designer develops designs, adapts existing designs, or copies existing designs for garments. The job includes altering garments, drawing patterns, altering patterns, conferring with customers to determine type of material and garment style desired, and positioning the pattern of garment parts on fabric.
Garment designers need to be good at customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction; design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models; raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
Important skills required in garment designing are that of operation and control, equipment selection, service orientation, and active listening. But the quintessential skills that make a garment designer are arm-hand steadiness, originality, finger dexterity, visualization, near vision, information ordering, and oral comprehension.
While most garment designers are employed into the retail industry, a few conduct research and design authentic period, country, or social class costumes to be worn by film, television, concert, stage, and other performers and are designated as Costume Designers.
